According to a new study, team sports can help middle-age women keep their hearts healthy – even as they lose estrogen during menopause.
Unfortunately, declining levels of estrogen often put women at risk of cardiovascular disease.
But researchers found that team sports can make up for the estrogen loss because participation helps improve fitness, reduce blood pressure, and protects the cardiovascular system.
The women in the study played floorball – which is pretty much street hockey with no skates – a couple times a week.
In just 12 weeks, the women enjoyed a 40 percent lower risk of stroke and 20 percent decrease in symptoms of hardening of the arteries.
Good stuff all around – just for running and playing twice a week. (UPI)
